Stem Cell Therapy

Does your pet:

  • Suffer from arthritis?
  • Show pain or stiffness after walks or when getting up?
  • Suffer from hip or elbow dyplasia?
  • Have chronic orthopaedic injury?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then stem cell therapy might assist in your pets problems.

What is stem cell therapy?

Regenerative stem cell therapy uses stem cells collected from your own pets fat to promote healing and repair of damaged cartilage in inflamed joints. This will relieve the pain and discomfort associated with chronic arthritis. The treatment is appropriate to many different chronic degenerative conditions affecting your pets joints.

Stem cell therapy has been used for many different species, including dogs, cats and horses and is one of the rapidly advancing technologies in human medicine. Stem cells in animals are harvested from the patients fat, processed in our laboratory and then activated using specific LED light sources. These active stem cells are then introduced back into the patient where they will promote healing and regeneration of damaged tissues.

Stem cell therapy is performed as a day procedure at Queanbeyan Vet Hospital. Your pet will undergo an anaesthetic to collect the stem cell containing fat. At this same anaesthetic X-rays may be taken to identify affected joints. Your pet then recovers while we process the fat and activate the stem cells - this usually takes 2-3 hrs. The stem cells are them administered either directly into the joints or intravenously, at which point your pet is ready to go home!
